Classification of Albuterol
bronchodilator
Mechanism of Action of Albuterol
Binds to Beta-2 adrenergic receptors to relax smooth muscles of the bronchial tree. Bronchodilator.
Indications of Albuterol
Acute bronchospasms such as Asthma, COPD
Contraindications of Albuterol
tachycardia, dysrhythmias, cardiac disease, hypsersensitivity to meds
Side effects of Albuterol
Stiumulates SNS (sympathetic nervous system): anxiety, palpitations, chest discomfort, headache, perspiration, nausea, dizziness, headache, hyperglycemia, nervousness.
Resp: paradoxical bronchospasm
Adult dose of Albuterol
2.5mg- 5mg of premixed solution for inhalation over 5-15mins; may repeat up to 3X
Pediatric dose of Albuterol
for children 2-12 years old or <40lbs….
0.15mg/kg (2.5min); may repeat up to 3X
Overdose management for Albuterol
Tx (treatment): symptomatically, possible beta-blockers
Routes of admin of Albuterol
Nebulized, PO
Precautions/ Special considerations for Albuterol
Watch for CV effects specially in paties with Hx of CVD (Cardiovascular Disease)
