A
Alpha 2 Adrenergic Receptor Agonist
- Binds to a2 on presynaptic neuron which is Gi
- Decreases cAMP and opens Potassium sensitive channels
- Hyperpolarizes and decreases release of NE
Imidazoline Receptor Effect (not understood)

Advantages/Disadvantages of Dexmedetomidine
A
- Protect Airway Reflex in “sleep-like” sedation
- Respiratory Drive Intact
- Decrease HR, CO (due to decreased circulating catecholamines)
