Describe the power to legislate over immigration
This area of responsibility relates to border control and criteria set for immigration in the UK. This means that Scotland cannot have different immigration or passport control laws to the rest of the UK as it is not possible to isolate this power so that it only affects Scotland as the UK does not have hard borders.
Describe the power to legislate over foreign policy
This means that Scotland would need to become an independent country to create trade deals and political unions separate from the rest of the UK as Westminster reserve the power to make decisions over the UKs foreign policy and relationships.

This means that only the UK parliament and government can make decisions about matters which involve the use of the military and the protection of the UK and its borders. This is because the UK must be able to protect any of its nations and must have the ability to raise a strong and powerful national armed forces.

This matter is about making sure the people of Scotland are as healthy as they can be
and have the services they need such as hospitals, GPs and access to treatments. This allows the Scottish Government to introduce laws which means that Scotland has different health legislation to that of the rest of the UK.

This matter is about making sure that the education system in Scotland is running
well with good quality school buildings and enough teachers. This means that the Scottish government is responsible for making decisions on the curriculum studied in Scotland, the recruitment of teachers, building new school buildings and the funding of higher and further education. This is to ensure that the Scottish population is as educated and skilled as possible.

This area of responsibility relates to maintaining peace and safety in Scotland including
the running of the police and courts service in Scotland as well as the powers they have. This means that the Scottish government can introduce new laws and legislation that are unique to Scotland and are aimed at keeping the Scottish public safe.
