Developmental - Physiology of ageing Flashcards
1
Q
How is airway management different in the elderly
A
- Often edentulous
- -> difficult BVM
- -> easier intubation - Upper airway collapse
- -> Snoring/stertor during recovery GA –> hypoxaemia
2
Q
Summarise the respiratory changes in the elderly relevant to anaesthesia
A
- Reduced thoracic wall compliance (calcification costal cartilages)
- Kyphosis –> affects lung mechanics
- Atrophy respiratory muscles –> more susceptible to respiratory muscle fatigue
- Degeneration of elastic fibres in the alveolar septae
- -> Airway collapse during expiration –> increase CC –> V:Q mismatch
- -> Increased lung compliance - Increased RV and FRC
3
Q
Describe overall respiratory compliance in the elderly
A
Increased lung compliance
Reduced thoracic cage compliance
OVerall: reduced compliance –> the gradient of the pressure - volume curve is reduced
