Development of the Nervous System Flashcards
When does the Neural Plate form?
Week 3
The neural plate forms from surface ectoderm
When does the neural groove form?
Not too long after the neural plate
When does the Neural tube form?
Around week 4
The neural tube leads to the brain and spinal cord
What is Neurulation?
Folding
What is the marginal layer and what does it become?
The marginal layer is the outer layer and will form the white matter
What is the Mantle?
The mantle is the middle layer and will form the grey matter
What is the Ependymal?
It is the inner layer and will form the lining of ventricles
What is the neural crest derived from and what does it later form?
The Neural crest is from the embryonic ectoderm. It will later form the DRG, Spinal N.
Ganglia (CN & ANS), Adrenal medulla, and Meninges
Differentiation of the Brain begins:
Week 3
Name the Primary vesicles
- Prosencephalon
- Mesencephalon
- Rhombencephalon
The forebrain forms from the:
Prosencephalon
The Midbrain forms from the:
Mesencephalon
The Rhombencephalon forms from the:
Hindbrian
What does the spinal cord develop from?
The neural tube
When do the secondary vesicles form?
Week 5
Name all of the secondary vesicles:
- Telencephalon
- Diencephalon
- Metencephalon
- Myelencephalon
*Note: Mesencephalon is still involved in this stage
What forms the Cerebrum?
The Telencephalon which develops from the Prosencephalon (Forebrain)
What does the Thalamic structures develop from?
The Diencephalon which develops from the prosencephalon (Forebrain)
What forms the optic vesicle?
The Diencephalon which develops from the prosencephalon (Forebrain)
What forms the Tectum?
The mesencephalon (Midbrain)
What forms the Tegmentum?
The mesencephalon (Midbrain)
What forms the cerebellum
The Metencephalon which develops from the Rhombencephalon (Hindbrain)
What forms the pons?
The Metencephalon which develops from the Rhombencephalon (Hindbrain)
What forms the medulla?
The Myelencephalon which develops from the Rhombencephalon (Hindbrain)
During week 5 what is continuous with the spinal cord?
The medulla
Which ventricle is formed from the diencephalon
The third ventricle
Which ventricle is formed from the Telencephalon?
The Lateral ventricle (X2)
Which ventricle is formed from the Rhombencephalon?
The fourth ventricle
What provides communication between the 3rd and 4th ventricle?
The cerebral aqueduct
Development of what creates the dorsal/ventral orientation?
Development of the Sulcus
What forms in the floor of the 4th ventricles?
Longitudinal groove
Differentiation of medulla creates?
Med-Lat orientation
