It is the process of provisioning a society with the goods and services it requires to meet the needs of the members of society.

- Lower status is hazardous, mentally and physically taxing
- Inferior diets
- Low-income neighborhoods plagued by pollution, crime, and accidents
- Urban poor are prone to social isolation
- Unemployment may result in emotional, physiological, and psychological consequences
- Health-related expenditures are not a priority

- Translation of private into public pain is influenced by the person’s interpretation whether the pain is “normal” or “abnormal”
