Why was detente created

A

Boosting military power hadn’t succeeded in easing tensions.A new strategy was needed.
Arms race was so expensive so both countries were keen to reduce spending as living standards were dropping.
The USA and USSR wanted to avoid other near.1960s were marked by crises, including some of the most tense moments in the Cold War

SALT 1 treaty (signed in 1971 ) by US and USSR

A

It limited the number of anti ballistic missiles ( ACM’s ) each country could have and placed a temporary limit on the number of ICBMS ( intercontinental ballistic missiles ) on both sides

A

USSR did not stick to its word.It didn’t grant freedom of speech or freedom of movement to its citizens.This undermined the Helsinki Agreement and made USA distrust the USSR.
