Kennedy called together an Executive Commitee to discuss how US should react.
22 October
After several days of discussion, Kennedy decided not to launch an attack.Instead set up a naval blockade which prevented ships reaching Cuba without US permission
24 October
Soviet ships reached the blockade.Decided not to interact so direct confrontstion could be avoided
26 October
Khrushchev sent Kennedy a telegram.Offering to remove missiles in Cuba if US didn’t attack
27 October
Before Kennedy could reply Khrushchev sent another telegram saying missiles would only be removed if missiles from Turkey were removed as well
28 October
There was an agreement.Kennedy agreed to remove missiles of Turkey but this part of the deal was kept secret
Consequences of superpower relations
Tensions between superpowers decreases.Communication increased to try and stop these nearly catastrophic events
In June 1963 a hotline was established between Washington and Moscow.

Kennedy popularity increased as the fact that the milssiles were removed from Turkey was secret.Kennedy gained confidence in dealings with the Soviet Union.
