Detechnicalise Flashcards
Photosynthesis
Etymology - photo = light, synthesis = make
Photosynthesis is the process by which plants, some bacteria and some protistans use the energy from sunlight to produce glucose from carbon dioxide and water.
Cytokinesis
Cell division, which divides the cytoplasm of a parental cell into two daughter cells.
Polysaccharide
Etymology - poly = many, saccharide = sugar
e.g. Starch
Vaccine
A vaccine typically contains an agent that resembles a disease-causing micro-organism and is often made from weakened or killed forms of the microbe, its toxins or one of its surface proteins.
Immunity
The ability to resist a particular infection or toxin by the action of specific antibodies. Vaccines help develop immunity by imitating an infection - but this “imitation” infection does not cause illness.
