Designer Babies Yr10 Science Flashcards
Define cervix
The opening or neck of the uterus at the top of the vagina
Define vagina
Connects the cervix to the outside of the body, sperm is deposited here during sex
Define ovum
The female sex cell, egg
Define ovary
After puberty an egg or ovum is released from here every 28 days or so
Define oviduct
Carries ovum from the ovary to the uterus also called Fallopian tube
Define uterus
Womb, where the fertilised egg implants
Define sperm
The male sex cell it is adapted to swim from the vagina to the egg
Define testes
After puberty they make sperm continuously
Define scrotum
A sac of skin that holds the testes
Outline the route taken from the testes by the sperm as it leaves the body
Testes..epididymis..vas deferens..urethra..vagina..following tubes where it fertilisers an egg
Define genotype and phenotype
Our genetic makeup, the sum total of our genes is called a genotype, but the characteristics which show up in our appearance ar called a phenotype
Define alleles
An allele is one the possible forms of a gene. Most genes have two alleles a dominant allele and a recessive allele
Define homozygous
The genes are the same
Define heterozygous
The genes are different
How many pairs of chromosomes are in every human cell
23 pairs because half come from dad half from mum
What are gametes
Egg cells and sperm cells, each gamete contains half of the parents 46 chromosomes one of each pair
What is a gene
A gene is a section of DNA which codes for a specific characteristic eg. Hair colour
What are differences between dominant and recessive genes
recessive gene only shows if there are two copies. Dominant gene means there are two different genes but 1 gene dominates over the other
What is mitosis?
When a diploid cell divides the resulting daughter cells receive a perfect copy of their parents cell chromosomes.
What is meiosis?
Meiosis occurs in the cells of the ovaries and testes, producing gametes that only contain one of each type of chromosome
When a sperm and a egg meet, what is the process called?
Fertilization
