What is the purpose of a design strategy?
The design phase answers how the solution (all components) will operate.
What are the two design strategies?
Make or Buy
What are the pros and cons of each strategy/what criteria do we use to make a decision on the
design strategy?
Make:
No satisfactory systems on the market.
Can develop a more tailored system. Develop a competitive advantage.
Perhaps more scalable.
If I have the right expertise to actually make.
Support from snr mgmt, funding, timeline etc.
Buy:
Faster time to market (can use almost immediately)
Cheaper
If you don’t have the resources/expertise to make yourself.
Tried and tested (reliable), reduced risk.
Partnerships or relationships for future synergies.
Alignment with vendor values.
If you have an existing system on the market that can meet at least 65% of your requirements, then typically it is a good idea to use that. Smarter investment, time and cost wise.
