descriptive terms Flashcards
a general term to denote a pathologic or traumatic change in the tissue.
lesion
focal area of color change not elevated or depressed in relation to its surroundings; flat
macule
area of color change with NO elevation/depression
any shape or color
area of color change not elevated or depressed in relation to its surroundings (flat) that is greater than 2 cm in diameter
patch
a macule under 2cm (20mm) in diameter
solid, raised/elevated lesion less than 0.5cm (5mm) in diameter
Papule
solid, raised lesion greater than 0.5cm (5mm) in diameter
nodule
sessile - base widest
or pedunculated - narrow bastm “on a stalk)
red in color
Erythematous
base is the widest part of an elevated lesion
Sessile
base of an elevated lesion is narrower than the widest part (grows on stalk)
Pedunculated
exhibiting numerous surface projections
Papillary
exhibiting a rough, warty surface
Verrucous
superficial, partial loss of surface epithelium; may arise secondarily from rupture of bulla (blister)
Superficial loss of the surface epithelium
Heals without scarring
Usually looks red clinically
Erosive
Superficial loss of the surface epithelium
Heals without scarring
Usually looks red clinically
only stays in epidermis
not into basal zone
loss of surface epithelium down to the connective tissue, often appears depressed
Ulcerated
Complete loss of the surface epithelium
Involves lamina propria and possibly the deeper
submucosa of the connective tissue
Usually looks white/yellow intraorally due to
fibrinous pseudomembrane covering ulcer bed
narrow, slit-like ulceration or groove
Fissure
A linear cleavage or cleft of the mucosa
May or may not extend through the mucosa
a slightly elevated lesion and generally flat; can be of any surface area
Plaque
homonym of “plaque” which is the soft white deposit that accumulates on teeth
flat, round, pinpoint area(s) of hemorrhage, usually 3mm or less
Petechia(e)
