KNOW THIS

A

During pregnancy, the placenta produces hormones (like human placental lactogen, cortisol, and progesterone) that help the baby grow. However, these hormones can also make the mother’s body less sensitive to insulin, a condition known as insulin resistance.

As pregnancy progresses, insulin resistance increases. In most women, the pancreas compensates by producing more insulin. However, in some women, the pancreas can’t produce enough insulin to overcome the resistance, leading to elevated blood sugar levels, or GDM.

Impact on baby:
Macrosomia (Large Baby)
Hypoglycemia
Respiratory Distress Syndrome
Preterm birth
