Describe the Anatomical Position?
It is when the body is standing erect, facing forward with arms held to the side of the body with palms facing forward.
What are Anatomical planes?
The body is visually divided in to specific areas called planes.
What is the Traverse or horizontal plane?
This is a plane that divides the body into superior and inferior portions.
What is the mid-sagittal plane?
The mid-sagittal plane divides the body in to left and right portions following the midline or medial line.
What is the parasagittal plane?
The parasagittal plane, divides the body in to left and right portions from head to foot, following a line lateral to the midline or from the mid-clavicular line.
What is the frontal or coronal plane?
This divides the body into anterior and posterior portions.
What are directional terms?
These describe the relative position of a body part, injury etc.
What do the following terms mean? Inferior?
Below
Superior?
Above
Anterior?
Toward the front
Posterior?
Toward the back
Lateral?
Toward the side
Bilateral?
Paired structures.
Contralateral?
Structures on the opposite side.
Ipsilateral?
Structures on the same side.
