What is impetigo?
superficial skin infection
What are the main organisms that cause impetigo?
mainly Staph A
can also be Strep pyogenes
Treatment of impetigo?
- Localised impetigo can be treated with topical fusidic acid
- In severe/ significant impetigo oral antibiotic is flucloxacillin
What is cellulitis?
This is a bacterial infection of the lower dermis and subcutaneous tissue
What are the main organisms that cause cellulitis?
Staph A and Strep Pyogenes
What is necrotising fasciitis?
threatening bacterial infection of the soft tissue and fascia
What are the main organisms that can cause necrotising fasciitis?
Staph A, MRSA, Strep pyogenes, clostridium
Management of necrotising fasciitis?
- Patient needs admitted to ITU and treated with high dose IV antibiotics (micro should be done to determine the causative organism)
- Immediate surgical debridement of necrotic tissue also needs to be done
What is necrotising fasciitis characterised by?
severe pain that is out of proportion to the degree of skin inflammation and systemic upset
