What is first-line treatment for chronic plaque psoriasis?
NICE recommend:
- a potent corticosteroid applied once daily plus vit D analogue once daily
- applied separately i.e. once in morning and once in evening
- for up to 4 weeks as initial treatment
What is second-line treatment for chronic plaque psoriasis?
vit D analogue twice daily
What are causes of erythema nodosum?
infection: strep, tb,
systemic: sarcoidosis, IBD
malignancy/lymphoma
drugs: penicillins, sulfonamides, cocp
pregnancy
what is the management of scabies?
- permethrin 5% - first-line
- all household and close physical contacts should be treated at the same time, even if asymptomatic
What is dermatitis herpetiformis?
autoimmune blistering skin disorder associated with coeliac disease, caused by deposition of IgA in the dermis
What age does eczema present?
typically presents before 2 years but clears in around 50% of children by 5 years of age and in 75% by 10 years of age
What are the features of squamous cell carcinoma?
typically on sun-exposed sites such as the head and neck or dorsum of the hands and arms
rapidly expanding painless, ulcerate nodules
may have a cauliflower-like appearance
what is bowen’s disease?
type of precancerous dermatosis that is a precursor to a squamous cell carcinoma
more common in elderly patients
around a 5-10% chance of developing invasive skin cancer if left untreated
what are the features of bowen’s disease?
red, scaly patches
often 10-15mm in size
slow-growing
often occur on sun-exposed areas such as head and neck and lower limbs
what are the management options for Bowen’s disease?
may be diagnosed and managed in primary care if clear diagnosis
topical 5-fluorouracil
cryotherapy
excision
