Depositional beach features Flashcards
What are ridges and runnels?
A series of ridges and troughs running parallel to the coast near the low water mark
How are ridges and runnels formed?
Ridges - deposition during backwash
Runnels - water runs back to the ocean and erode
In what area of the shoreline are ridges and runnels form?
The Foreshore Zone
What are cusps?
Semi-circular shapes depressions with coarser material around the edge and finer material in the middle.
When do cusps form?
When two waves meet the same point and fine material is removed from the centre.
In which area of the shore are cusps located?
The Foreshore Zone
What are ripples?
Small, elongated ridges of sand that run parallel to the coastline.
When do ripples form?
When waves drag loose sand along the bottom of the seabed where it is piled up on low gradient beaches
What is a storm beach/berm?
A steep ridge found near the back of the beach composed of larger sediment.
How does a storm beach/berm form?
Waves deposit material during storm events.
In what area of the coastline is a storm beach/berm located?
backshore
What is a berm?
A small ridge of sediment that forms at the high tide mark.
How are berms formed?
The swash on constructive waves deposits material at the high tide mark.
