Coastal management Flashcards
What are the traditional approaches to coastal management? What do they focus on?
- Hard engineering (artificial approach)
- Soft Engineering ( Enhancing natural processes)
These focus on a short stretch of coastline.
What are the sustainable approaches to coastal management? What do they focus on?
- ICZM - Integrated Coastal Zone Management
- SMP - Shoreline Management Plan
They focus on a full stretch of coastline, holistic planning method.
Give some facts about SMPs.
- They correspond with the sediment cells identified by DEFRA
- They are constantly reviewed to ensure long - term sustainability is met
- They plan out the actions of the ICZM
Define no active intervention
Not doing anything and allowing the coast to erode.
Define hold the line management
Using hard engineering (artificial) methods to limit natural processes which cause coastal erosion so the shore remains in place.
Define advance the line management
Using hard engineering methods to increase the volume of sediment on the beach, extending the coastline by increasing deposition.
Define managed realignment
The controlled flooding of a low-lying coastal area, e.g. a saltmarsh.
