Departure - Airport Facilities Flashcards
Where can a pilot find information concerning facilities available for a particular airport?
Chart Supplement
What do the following acronyms stand for?
ALSF-1: Approach light system with sequenced flashing lights CAT-I configuration
SSALF: Simplified short approach light system with sequenced flashing lights
MALSR: Medium intensity approach light system with runway alignment indicator lights
REIL: Runway end identifier lights
MIRL: Medium intensity runway lighting
PAPI: Precision approach path indicator system
What color are runway edge lights?
- White
- Last 2,000’ of instrument runways are yellow
What colors and color combinations are standard airport rotating beacons?
Land: White/green
Water: White/yellow
Military: 2 White/green
What does the operation of a rotating beacon at an airport within Class D airspace during daylight hours mean?
In Class B/C/D/E beacon during daylight indicate visibility less than 3 miles or ceilings less than 1,000’
Where would information concerning runway lengths, widths, and weight bearing capacities be found?
Chart supplement
What are runway touchdown zone markings?
Coded to provide 500’ increments usually 3 groups of rectangular bars
What is the purpose of runway aiming point markings?
Serve as visual point for landing aircraft.
Two broad white rectangular markings indicate 1,000’ from threshold
How far down the runway does the touchdown zone extend?
the first 3,000’ of the runway from each threshold
How can you identify ILS critical area?
Marking is two parallel yellow solid lines connected by pairs of solid lines
The area is protected when weather is less than 800’ ceilings and/or 2 miles visibility
What doe the acronym “RWSL” stand for?
Runway status light system: automated system providing runway status information when unsafe to cross/enter system consists of:
- Runway Entrance Lights(REL) - Takeoff Hold Lights(THL) - Runway Intersection Lights(RIL) - Final Approach Runway Occupancy Lights(FAROS)
Describe runway hold short marking and signs.
Marking:Indicate where aircraft should stop while approaching a runway. Four lines: 2 dashed/2 solid. Solid line on the side of the taxiway
Sign: Indicate holding position on taxiways, red background with white text
Preflight planning for taxi operations should be an integral part of the pilot’s flight planning process. What information should this include?
- Review airport signage/markings/lighting
- Review airport diagram, planned taxi route, identify hotspots
- Review NOTAMs and ATIS
- Conduct pre-taxi/pre-landing brief
- Plan for critical times and locations
- Plan as many checklist items prior to taxi
What is an airport surface “hot spot”?
Spot with increased risk during surface operations. Usually area with confusing intersections and history of incidents. Indicated by HS1/HS2
When issued taxi instructions to an assigned takeoff runway, are you automatically authorized to cross any runway that intersects your taxi route?
No, you must receive runway crossing clearance for each runway
