Dentition Flashcards
When are SLPs concerned with abnormal dentition?
When the dental abnormalities affect speech
What is the role of the SLP?
To first determine whether the abnormal speech is related to abnormal structure or abnormal function. If it is caused by abnormal structure, it is important to determine whether there are obligatory distortions (due to abnormal structure only) or compensatory errors (alterations in articulation placement due to abnormal structure)
Where are teeth formed and located?
Premaxilla forms the primary palate/hard palate (6-8 weeks gestation)
Premaxilla holds the top four incisors
Palatal shelves forms the palatine process of the maxilla/secondary palate (8-10 weeks gestation)
Palatal shelves hold all the other teeth

Palatal Shelves

Palatal shelves hold all the other teeth
When do bone grafts occur?
Teeth will migrate to where there is bone, typically bone graft surgeries are done in children 8-10 years old
How are adult teeth identified?
Numbered
How are immature/deciduous teeth identified?
Lettered (A-T)
Children have 2 front incisors, 2 lateral incisors, 1 set of cuspids, 2 molars
Identifying surfaces of teeth
"towards": front/back "towards": tongue/cheek medial: midline facing front distal: midline facing back lingual: tongue/buccal (cheek)
What is Dental Occlusion?
Upper and lower teeth coming together
Upper teeth
maxillary
Lower teeth
mandibular
Overjet
front incisors close over bottom incisors/cover the bottom completely. Too much overlap of the upper incisors over the lower incisors
Underjet/anterior crossbite
reversal of the normal upper to lower incisor relationships so that the upper incisors are inside (or lingual to) the lower incisors
Malocclusion
Describes the molar relationship
Class 1: molar relationship typical (may have crooked teeth)
Class 2: Overbite- 1st maxillary molar too far forward
Class 3: Underbite- 1st maxillary molar too far back
