Assessment of Articulation and Language Flashcards
Speech obligatory errors versus compensatory errors
Obligatory: nasal air emissions, hypernasality, distortions due to structural defect- speech work cannot fix until mechanical/structural repairs are done.
Compensatory: glottal stops, pharyngeal and palatal fricatives (manner correct, wrong place)
Kids with compensatory strategies can be highly intelligible, SLP may need to observe mechanical movements to diagnose.
Language: General Delay with CP
kids with artic errors will likely fall behind in language and literacy as well.
Cognition factors/ Parent distress and less interaction with child?
Encourage parents to talk and use language around child as much as possible.
Assessment Overview
Assess child with CP like you would any other child. Just know that there may be more issues going on (higher risk of ear infection, higher risk of needing SLP services)
