Density and Buoyancy Flashcards
Density
the mass of matter per unit volume; density is typically expressed in units of grams per milliliter (g/mL), grams per cubic centimeter (g/cm^3), or kilograms per cubic meter (kg/m^3)
Weight
the downward force of gravity acting on mass
Buoyancy
the measure of the
upward force a fluid exerts on an
object that is submerged.
Archimedes’ Principle
states that the buoyant force is equal to
the weight of the fluid displaced by
an object.
Meniscus
A meniscus is a curve in the surface of a liquid. A concave meniscus occurs when the liquid’s particles are more strongly attached to the container than than each other. A convex meniscus occurs when the liquid’s particles are more strongly attached to each other than the container
Average Density
The total mass divided by the total volume
Physical Change
A (usually) reversible change in the form or appearance of substance, but not its properties or composition.
