What does Vertovec say about diversity?
believes that because of globalisation we now have “super diversity” as migrants come from a much wider range of countries rather than just a narrow range of former British colonies

What is happening to net migration?
very recently, net migration is increasingly sharp, possible its to do with conflict and war
for e.g.- Israel and Palestine, Ukraine and Russia, Rwanda etc
What happened in 2004 and 2007 impacting UK migration?
between 2004 and 2007 NET migration reached peak records, partly because of migration from countries that joined the EU
What is globalisation?
The creation of world culture. Happening due to developments in technology and world travel.
What is human trafficking?
the illegal transportation of humans from one place to another.
Give some examples of reasons why people are trafficked?
sexual exploitation
domestic servitude
organ harvesting
forced labour
Why do you think it is referred to as modern day slavery?
humans involved have no choice or freedom. no reward for their work, very exploitative.
How may human trafficking impact the family?
can lead to separation and splitting up of lots of family’s due to emotional strain on family
domestic servitude would mean that he family are not doing any domestic tasks or childcare
How has globalisation
impacted birth and fertility?
increase in UK birth and fertility rate as migrant women are more likely to have larger families
How has globalisation impacted family diversity?
more immigration means that more ethnically diverse families
more Caribbean people means more matrifocal families
more South Asian families means more extended families
What is the feminisation of migration?
in past most immigrants were male. Today half of all migrants are women.
Ehrenreich and Hochschild- claim care work, domestic work and sex work in UK and USA is increasingly done by women from poorer countries.
What are the reasons for the feminisation of migration?
more service sector jobs that increasingly employ women
western women are in the workforce and have less time for domestic work
lack of adequate, affordable state childcare
What has there been a global transfer of due to feminisation of migration?
global transfer of emotional labour. Migrant nannies providing care and affection for their employer’s children at the expense of their own
What are the other consequences of increasing globalisation and migration on the family?
breaking up families- now strict rules about immigrants bringing family members to the UK.
A minimum income requirement must be met before family members can join workers in the UK
Workers now getting payed adequate amounts may join shared accommodation w other immigrant low payed workers.
Increase in LAT’s due to being in another country.
