What is democracy?
- Everyone is equal and has rights
- Everyone has a chance to vote for their leaders
- A democracy only works if everyone knows how it is going to be run so they can prevent or solve problems.
When in South Africa did we have our first inclusive democratic election?
On April 27 1994. We call this day Freedom Day.
What do people vote for in South Africa?
Local government - Hout Bay
Provincial government - Western Cape
And National government - South Africa
How often do South Africans vote for provincial and national elections?
5 years
What does the South African Constitution tell us?
- How the government should rule the country
- What the human rights of South Africa citizens are
- And that even the President and our representatives in Parliament have to obey the law
When and where did the first democracy start?
In Ancient Greece in 450BC.
Why did they people of Ancient Greece start democracy?
Because the people wanted to make choices about they way they lived and how they were ruled.
What does the word democracy mean?
Government by the people.
What is an inclusive democratic election?
Everyone can vote! ie all blacks, women, slaves.
How old do you have to be in South Africa to vote?
18 years old.
Is voting in an election secret?
Yes.
When voting in South Africa do we vote for a person or a political party?
Political Party.
eg ANC not Jacob Zuma.
When was the South African constitution written?
1996.
Why do we have a constitution in South Africa?
To protect the right of the people of South Africa.
What is the name of the South African constitution?
Rule of Law.
