- Protein deposits called lewy bodies within neurons in the cerebral cortex
- Lewy bodies build up in neurons and causes neurons to die
4
Q
Vascular dementia
A
Progressive loss of brain function due to poor blood flow to the brain
- Atherosclerois in carotid arteries
- Reduce blood flow to the brain - chronic ischaemia
- Ischaemic stroke
- Brain tissue necrosis/loss of brain function -> Dementia
5
Q
Clinical charac lewy body dementia
A
- overlap with idiopathic parkinson’s disease
- Cognitive impairment
- Visual hallucination
- Resting tremor
- Slow and stiff movement
6
Q
Alzheimer’s disease
A
Most common form of dementia
- Neurodegenerative - loss of neurons in brain tissue
- Build up of amyloid plaques can affect neuronal transmission
- Overtime brain atrophies/Gyri get narrower/Ventricles get larger
7
Q
Risk factors for Alzheimer’s
A
- Sporadic - late onset/ cause not found
2. Familial - dominant gene/early onset alzheimer’s
8
Q
Symptoms for alzheimer’s
A
- Loss of shorterm memory
- Motor skills lost
- Loss of long term memory
- Loss of language
