What are the diagnostic features of dementia
Multiple cognitive deficits (must include memory impairment) and at least 1 of these: aphasia, apraxia, agnosia, problems with executive function
What is the DSM-5
Focuses on a decline of function rather than specific deficits
Less emphasis on memory - as it is not always the first symptom
What are some considerations for those with early onset dementia
May have dependent children still living at home
May be more aware of their disease in the early stages
May find it harder to accept and cope with loosing skills at a younger age
May find it hard to access info and support for people younger
What is MMSE
Mini Mental State Exam
Quick (15min) screening
All language based so if language function isn’t good (because of stroke) they could be wrongly diagnosed
What does MMSE involve
Saying the date, location
Naming objects
Subtracting 7s from 100
What are some of the symptom of DAT
Mild: Word-finding difficulties, Depressive/reactive emotional state
Moderate: Comprehension difficulties, Working mem impairment, reduced attention span
Severe: neo-logistic speech (nonsense words), Mute
What are the 2 variants of Frontotemporal dementia
Behavioral variant
Primary progressive aphasia
Describe Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA)
2 varients:
Non-fluent aphasia: effortful speech
