deindividuation Flashcards
what is antisocial behaviour
behaviour that’s harmful to other people, this includes behaving aggressively and anything that could cause distress
what is collective behaviour
behaviour that comes from people when they join as a group, the group may behave differently to how the individual may have behaved on their own
what is deindividuation
a psychological state in which an individual loses their personal identity and takes the identity of the people around them
what did zimbardo aim to do
he aimed to investigate deindividuation as an adaptation of milgram’s study
what was the method used
4 female students were told to give electric shocks to sid learning
they were split into 2 groups:
Group 1- individuated, normal clothes, name tags and could see each other
Group 2- deindividuated, large coats and hoods and were not referred to by name
what were the results
group 2 was more likely to shock for longer
what was the conclusion
anonymity and deindividuation increased likelihood of anti social behaviour
what is a strength of this study PEE
can be used to manage crowds
the conclusion from this study can be taken and applied to situations where crowds could lead to antisocial behaviour, things like putting cctv cameras everywhere would reduce the likelihood of this happening
this is important as it shows the study is applicable to real life situations
what is a weakness of this study PEE
one weakness of this is that deindividuation can be due to crowding rather than collective behaviour.
research has shown that when people are tightly packed it causes crowding and can cause people do feel stress, anxiety and frustration
this is important because it shows that collective behaviour can be explained by overcrowding as well as deindividuation
