Adorno's theory (dispositional factors) Flashcards
what were the 5 aspects of the theory
the theory authoritarian personality cognitive style originates in childhood scapegoating
what was the theory
he claimed a particular personality was more likely to obey authority
high levels of obedience were a psychological disorder
what did adorno mean by the authoritarian personality
people with this personality have an:
- exaggerated respect for authority
more likely to obey orders
look down on people with inferior status
what did adorno mean by cognitive style
authoritarian people have closed rigid mindsets. they see in black and white and prefer stereotyping
what did adorno mean by originates in childhood
this personality was made through nurture not nature. this can happen through strict parenting high expectations and standards
what did adorno mean by scapegoating
people with build up anger need to displace it elsewhere, they displace it to people that are socially inferior to them
what was the f scale
a scale used to measure the authoritarian personality. it measures the relationship between personality types and prejudice beliefs
what is a weakness of this theory PEE
conclusion was based off a poorly made questionnaire
he used the f scale on 2000 middle aged americans, it had a response bias as people who answered yes more would score higher, yes and no are on 2 opposite ends of the spectrum and cannot determine someone’s answer
this is important because it shows the theory was based off poor evidence
