Dehydration Flashcards
3 commonly used solutions for dehydration
Alcohol
Acetone
Dioxane
Examples of alcohols used for dehydration
Methyl alcohol
Ethyl alcohol
Butyl alcohol
Isopropyl alcohol
Alcohols for dehydration that may be ustilized but are slow dehydrating agents
Butyl alcohol
Isopropyl alcohol
Used for most urgent biopsies
Acetone method
Has the propertyof being miscible with both water and molten paraffin wax
Dioxane method (Diethylene dioxide)
An excellent dehydrating and clearing agent
Doioxane method (diethylene dioxide)
Used as both dehydrating and clearing agent; miscible with lower alcohols, ether, chloroform, acetone, benzene, and xylene
Tetrahydrofuran (THF)
Dehydrating agent with rapid action without producing overhardening and distortion of tissues
Cellosolve (Ethylene Glycol Monoethylether)
Removes water very rapidly and produces very little distortion and hardening of tissue; produces minimum tissue shrinkage
Tri-ethyl phosphate
Process of removing extracellular and intracellular water from tissue following fixation and prior to wax infiltration
Dyhdration
