Q

TKA or TKR

A

numerous implant and fixation choices available:

  • cemented, uncemented, hybrid
  • metal backed or all polyethylene
  • patella resurfacing or patella retaining

Effective in treating OA that is not responsive to conservative therapy

recovery of strength to normal levels is rare

early intensive rehab has been proven effective

Q

THR: phase 1a (hospital)

A

hopefully a 3 day stay for medicare

1-2 days

goals: prevent complications, inc muscle contraction and control of involved LE, help pt sit for 30 min, reinforce THR precautions

17
Q

THR: phase 1b (hospital SNF)

A

3-7 days post

goals: promote transfers and gait independence, AD use, THR precautions, D/c to home

18
Q

THR: phase 2 (return to home)

A

1-6 weeks after surgery

goals: eval safety at home, pt indep with transfers/ambulation, plan to return to work

may have home care phase

19
Q

Exercise options

A

gait taining

SLRs and hip abd strength

closed chain activities

possible aquatic once incision healed

treadmill for gait/aerobic

cone stepping
