Defintions Flashcards
Toxicant
Poison
Toxin
Poison that originates from biological processes
Toxicosis
Disease state that results from exposure to a poison
Toxicity
Quantity or amount of poison that causes a toxic effect
Dose
Amount of toxicant received per animal
Dosage
Amount of toxicant per unit animal mass or weight. +/- Time
Route of exposure
How the animal is exposed to toxicant (oral, inhalation, dermal etc.)
Threshold dose
Highest dose of a toxicant where no toxic effects are observed.
Lethal Dose (LD)
Acute dose resulting in death. Usually presented as the dose resulting in death of 50% of animals (LD50)
Lethal Concentration (LC)
Lowest concentration of a chemical in a matrix that causes death. (Mostly fish and wildlife)
Median Lethal Dose (MLD)
Used interchangeably with LD50
NOEL
No Observed Effect Level: Highest dose at which a significant effect could not be detected
NOAEL
No Observed Adverse Effect Level: highest dose where an adverse effect could not be found
LOEL
Lowest Observed Effect Level: Lowest dose at which a significant effect could be found
LOAEL
Lowest Observed Adverse Effect Level: lowest dose where a significant adverse effect could be found
