Statistical infrequency:
Behaviour that is statistically infrequent and rarely seen. When a normal distribution curve is produced, behaviour taht is abnormal will be ranked at either end.
Bad pints about statistical infrequencies:
Shouldn’t use IQ, people with low or high IQ may be perfectly normal/ sane
Deviation from social norms:
Behaviour that is not deemed as acceptable by society or a culture.
Bad points abiut deviation from socials norms:
Behaviour is subjective, may have changed throughout history and is different for everyone so can it be measured accurately?
Maladaptiveness:
When behaviour, emotions or thoughts are dangerous and stop person from functioning well. E.g self harm, self destructing over relationships. Also OCD (late to work because of routine)
+ allows for individual differences
+ aren’t always followed by a psychiatric diagnosis
