Biological Treatments Flashcards
MAO inhibitors:
Prevent breakdown of serotonin, noradrenaline and dopamine, so levels of all three build up
Anti depressants
Weakness of MAO:
Effective in approximately 50% of cases, but with severe side effects
Used only when other treatments fail
SSRIs: selective serotonin reputable inhibitors
Stop serotonin being reabsorbed and broken down after it has crossed a synapse
What’s good about having multiple different anti depressants:
Everyone’s symptoms are different so something to work for everyone
ECT: electro- convulsive disorder
Controversial and usually used as a last resort
Administer electric shocks to brain for a few seconds this includes a seizure
What did Comer (2002) find out about ECT?
60-70% improvement rate but it was found that patients did relapse and multiple treatments of ECT were needed
Strengths:(3)
Can be only options in severe cases
Many ppl don’t want the explanation, just want to feel better
Practical and cost-efficient
Weaknesses (3):
Doesn’t look at situation factors
Reductionist
Doesn’t look at all at prevention just treatment
