Definitions And Properties Flashcards
What is Density?
Units?
The measure of mass per unit volume. The more dense, the heavier.
Kg/m^3
What is Fatigue?
When a metal is subjected to cyclic loadings, it will (after sufficient repetitions) start to crack.
What is Elasticity?
A body is said to be perfectly elastic if, after it has been deformed by external forces, it returns completely to its original shape when the forces are removed.
What is Unit Stress?
Units?
The force per unit area.
N/m^2
Pa
What is Tension?
To stretch or lengthen a material.
What is Compression?
To compress or shorten a material.
What is Shear?
Two skins coming away from each other.
What is Combined Stress?
Tensile and Shear together.
What is Possion’s Ratio?
If the material is stretched, it gets thinner
Define Hardness
The ability to resist indentation.
Define Strength
The ability to withstand stress without breaking.
Define Plasticity
Can be reshaped.
Define Ductility
Can be drawn into thinner sections without breaking.
Define Malleability
Can be beaten into shape.
Define Toughness
Can be deformed without breaking.
Define Brittleness
Will break with little to no change in shape.
Define Conductivity
Carry current, transmit heat.
Define Durability
Withstand force over a period of time.
What is Elastic Limit?
How far it can go before it becomes permanently deformed.
What is Yield Stress?
Similar to Elastic Limit.
What is Ultimate Stress?
Point just before failure.
