Ceiling
Height above surface the lowest layer of clouds or obscuring phenomena that is “broken”, “overcast”, and not classified as “thin” or “partial”
Category (ratings)
Broad classification of aircraft
Rotorcraft, airplane, glider, etc.
Category (aircraft)
Grouping of aircraft based on intended use or operation limits
Normal, utility, restricted, etc.
Class (ratings)
Classification of aircraft within a category having similar operating characteristics
Single engine, multi, helicopter, etc.
Class (aircraft)
Grouping of aircraft having similar characteristics of propulsion, flight, or landing
Airplane, rotorcraft, glider, ballon, seaplane, etc
Commercial Operator
A person who, for compensation or hire, engages in the carriage by aircraft in air commerce of persons or property.
Test: if carriage by air is merely incidental to the persons other business or is, in itself, a major enterprise for profit.
Flight time
Pilot time that commences when an aircraft moves under its Own power for the purpose of flight and ends when the aircraft comes to rest after landing
ARHI: Hobbs time.
Flight visibility
Average forward horizontal distance, from the cockpit of an aircraft in flight, at which prominent unlighted objects may be seen and identified by day and prominent lighted objects may be seen and identified by night.
Ground visibility
Prevailing horizontal visibility near the earths surface as reported by the NWS or an accredited observer.
Large aircraft
Aircraft of more than 12,500lbs, max certified takeoff weight
Major repair
Cannot be done by elementary operations. If done improperly might effect weight, balance, structural strength, performance, power plant operation, flight characteristics, or other qualities effecting airworthiness
Night
Time b/w the end of evening civil twilight and the beginning of morning civil twilight, as published in the American air almanac converted to local time.
Operational control
The exercise of authority over initiating, conducting, or terminating a flight.
PIC
Person who
1) has final authority and responsibility for the operation and safety of the flight
2) has been designated as the pilot in command before or during the flight; and
3) holds the appropriate category, class, and type rating, if appropriate, for the conduct of the flight.
Preventative maintenance
Simple or minor preservation operations and the replacement of small standard parts not involving complex assembly operations
