Definitions Flashcards
What is the definition of MAC?
The alveolar concentration of inhalational anesthetic at which 50% of patients don’t respond to surgical incision
What is the definition of pharmacokinetics?
what the body does to the drug
What is the definition of pharmacodynamics?
what the drug does to the body
What is FRC?
The amount of air left in the lungs after normal exhalation.
The equilibrium point where inward recoil of the lungs = outward recoil
What is closing capacity?
the volume at which small airways in the lungs begin to close
What is forced vital capacity?
The volume of gas that can be expired as forcefully and rapidly as possible after maximal inspiration
What is the definition of PaO2?
It is the partial pressure of oxygen (the amount dissolved in plasma and unbound) in the arterial blood. It tells us how well gas exchange in the lungs is going. UNRELATED TO HEMOGLOBIN. Depends on PAO2 and the alveolar-capillary interface.
What is the definition of SaO2/oxygen saturation?
The percentage of all the available heme binding sites that are saturated with oxygen. This is mainly determined by PaO2. Tells us how much oxygen is attached to hemoglobin. This will be affected by factors that affect the O2 dissociation curve.
What is the definition of CaO2/oxygen content?
This is the amount of oxygen in the blood. The SaO2 and the hemoglobin content determine this number. Anything that messes with the O2 dissociation curve and hemoglobin content of blood will affect this number
What is coronary reserve?
The ability of the coronary flow to increase circulation over baseline state
