Definitions Flashcards
Crust
The solid, outermost layer of the Earth. It is made of two main types and broken into sections we call tectonic plates
Mantle
The layer of the earth directly beneath the crust. Made of molten and semi-molten rocks.
Tectonic Plate
A large slab of the earth’s crust
Plate boundary
The place where two plates meet.
Convection Current
Circular movements of material within the mantle. These help move the Earth’s crust
Slab pull
The pulling force caused by the weight of a subducting plate. The force drags the plate across the surface.
Ridge Push
Plates slide away from the raised mid-ocean ridges. This drives the plate’s movement.
Oceanic Crust
Continental Crust
Basalt
Granite
Construct
To build something
Destroy
To break something
Collide
When two objects crash together
Diverge
When two objects move apart
