what is a state?
= A POLITICAL ENTITY
1. organised by a single government
2. right to self-determination
3. internationally recognised
4. independent with clear boundaries
(THE POWER)
- some have ability to drive + dominate ether global system + significant influence in geopolitical events, others can only react + respond to change
what is a nation?
= A CULTURAL/ETHNIC ENTITY
1. large group of people wit strong bonds of identity e.g. shared traditions, culture, language, and history
2. can be spread over many states
3. don’t have own govt. or sovereign power
what is sovereignty
= SUPREME POWER OR AUTHORITY
- the right of a state to govern itself, its own territory, have full control over its own affairs = no other state can intervene in its domestic politics
what is territorial integrity?
= AGREED SPACE/LAND AREA
-defined => territory is unbreakable
- boundaries agreed under international law=> no other state can annex land
what is the Westphalian model?
= principles in international law that each state has sovereignty over it’s territory
1. show international relations + strengthens nations through mutually recognised territories
2. principles reinforced in the UN Charter but current threats erode concepts
3. formal recognition of stat independency
what are norms?
=accepted ways of doing things/accepted standards derived from moral principles -> develop overtime to shape behaviour of a state + its people
-based on principles in UN charter
- promote + develop friendly external relations
- protect state’s citizens
what are interventions?
= actions of international organisations of supranational bodies to resolve conflict + provide humanitarian help e.g. NGOs and economic sanctions
- used when a govt. fails to protect citizens/ethnic group conflict/civil war
what is geopolitics?
= GLOBAL BALANCE OF POWER + international relations by TNCs + supranational bodies
- UNEVEN throughout world
what is global governance?
= intervention by global community to regulate issues concerning human rights, sovereignty and TI
