Definitions Flashcards
Ascites
accumulation of free fluid in the abd. cavity
Portal hypertension
blockage/ obstruction of blood flow of portal system – increase of portal pressure (140-160)
Cirrhosis of the liver
condition in which liver scars or have fibrotic changes due to liver damage, scars prevent liver to function normally
Syndrome (disease) Budd-Chiari
obstruction of hepatic veins (hepatic venous outflow)
Is a condition in which the hepatic veins (veins that drain the liver) are blocked or narrowed by a clot (mass of blood cells). This blockage causes blood to back up into the liver, and as a result, the liver grows larger
Carcinomatosis of the peritoneum
type of cancer that spread in the surface of peritoneum, invasive growth in connective tissue
Mesothelioma of the peritoneum
spread along the peritoneum without growing into the thickness of the organs covered with the peritoneum
Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis
Ascitic fluid can become infected for no apparent reason or after paracentesis.
Serum-albumin ascitic gradient
SAAG ≥ 1.1 g / l is to determined the cause of ascites
SAAG> 1.1 g / L there is portal hypertension
SAAG <1.1 g / L portal pressure is normal.
Hypersplenism
Hypersplenismis when your spleen becomes overactive in doing its job, is a common disorder characterized by an enlarged spleen which causes rapid and premature destruction of blood cells.
HBsAg
Hepatitis B Surface Antigen, is a protein that is present on the surface of the virus that causes hepatitis B. It is found in the blood in both acute and chronic hepatitis B.
Palmar erythema
Is a condition of the skin that makes the palm to become red due to abnormal serum estradiol levels
(The redness of palmar erythema is due to increased dilatation of surface capillaries in the hand. The degree of redness is often related to the severity of any underlying disease)
Teleangiectasia
Network of small convoluted vessels of microvasculature, located subepithelialy, mainly in lower third of esophagus
Liver elastography
Is an exam to check the severity of hepatic fibrosis in patients with chronic liver disease. measuresliverstiffness (hardness) and fatty changes in yourliver
