Definitions Flashcards
Relative isotopic mass
Mass of a single atom of an isotope compared to 1/12 of carbon 12
Relative atomic mass
Weighted average mass of a single atom compared to 1/12 of carbon 12
First ionisation energy
The first ionisation energy is the energy required to remove one mole of the most loosely held electrons from one mole of gaseous atoms to produce 1 mole of gaseous ions each with a charge of 1+.
Successive ionisation energy
It is the energy needed to remove a second electron from each ion in 1 mole of gaseous 1+ ions to give gaseous 2+ ions.
Metallic bonding
The strong electrostatic forces of attraction between metal ions and delocalised electrons
Ionic bonding
The strong electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions
Covalent bond
The strong electrostatic force of attraction between two positive nuclei and shared pair of electrons
