definitions Flashcards
Displacement
the distance of a point on the wave from its undisturbed position or equilibrium position
The distance travelled in a particular direction; it is a vector quantity
velocity
An objects speed in a particular direction, or the rate of change of an objects displacement; it is a vector quantity
acceleration
The rate of change of velocity of an object; the unit is m s^-2. The definition puts the formula into words.
weight
The force on an object caused by a gravitational field acting on its mass
Linear momentum
Linear momentum is defined as the product of a system’s mass multiplied by its velocity:
p = mv
displacement equation
Displacement (s) of an object equals, velocity (u) times time (t), plus ½ times acceleration (a) times time squared (t2).
Velocity formula
average velocity = displacement/change in time
V = delta X/ delta t
acceleration forumla
Average acceleration = final velocity - starting velocity / time
a = (v - v0) / t
Force (weight) equation
Weight is a measure of the force of gravity pulling down on an object. It depends on the object’s mass, which is how much matter the object contains. Weight can be represented by the equation: F = m × 9.8 m/s2. F represents the object’s weight in Newtons (N), which is the SI unit for weight
Momentum (linear) eqution
Momentum = mass x velocity p = mv
