Q

What are the six key aspects of functional movements?

A
  1. They are natural
  2. Universal motor recruitment pattern
  3. Essential to your daily life
  4. Safer than non-functional movement
  5. Compound yet irreducible
  6. Core-To-Extremity

Q

How to quantify functional movement?
What can we measure?

A

The defining characteristic of functional movements is their ability to move large loads over long distances quickly.

force x distance / time = average power.

Force, distance, and time are easily recorded as the load lifted, repetitions performed, and time is taken to complete the task.

Q

What CrossFit defines as intensity?

A
  1. Power and intensity are exactly equal to each other. Intensity is therefore objective and measurable using force, distance, and time.
  2. Intensity is NOT a high heart rate, VO2 max, yelling, or sweating; these are correlates of intensity. Intensity is the independent variable most commonly associated with maximizing the rate of return for favorable adaptation.
  3. Intensity needs to be relative to the individual’s physical and psychological tolerances.

Q

Why is it important to have variances?

A
  1. The goal of variance is to create a broad, general, and inclusive fitness.
  2. Be prepared for the unknown It pushes us outside our comfort zone

Q

How to use variance? What to vary?

A

Variations in loading, time, repetition range and movements are the most important elements to consider.

Q

Why CrossFit uses gymnastics?

A

It develops strength, flexibility, coordination, balance, accuracy, and agility.

Gymnastics and calisthenics allow for increases in strength only while increasing the strength-to-weight ratio!
