For persons who served in the U.S. military, who spent 6 months or more in Northern Europe (Germany, UK, Belgium, the Netherlands) from 1980 to 1990 or spent 6 months or more from 1980 to 1996 in Greece, Turkey, Spain, Portugal, or Italy.

If a donor received a blood transfusion in the United Kingdom from 1980 to the present

• Uses a harmless virus to deliver a genetic code to the body
• If non-replicating, donors are usually eligible after 48 hours
• If replication-competent, deferral period may be longer, usually around 2–4 weeks
