Deep Back Muscles (quizlet) Flashcards
What is the purpose of intervertebral discs?
Flexility allows for the movement of vertebral spine, not just a shock absorber
Explain healthy curvature of spine (Sagittal plane)
Anteriorly concave kyphosis: found in thorax and sacrum
Anteriorly convex lordosis: natural curvature of neck (cervical) and lower back (lumbar)
Name the muscle of the transversospinalis group
- rotator brevis/longus: TP-SP (1-2 segments)
- multifidis brevis/longus: TP-SP (3-4 segments, mainly in lumbar region)
-semispinalis: same but 5-8 segments. When you first uncover back, you mainly see the long slips of this muscle. Don’t extend to lumbar region
Superiorly-capitus: more superior & superficial
-cervicis
Name the name and location of the erector spinae muscles
Most lateral: iliocostales
Middle: longissimus
Most medial: spinalis
What deep muscle connects the TP of one vertebrae to the ribs?
Levatores costarum: brevis and longus “complex” 1-2 segments
*weak rib lifters?
What are the two single segment adjacent muscles?
Interspinalis: SP-SP
Intertransversarii: TP-TP
Name the deep back muscles
Erector spinae: iliocostales, longissimus, spinalis
Spinotransverse: splenius capitis/ cervicis
Transversospinalis: semispinalis, multifidus, rotators
Transversocostal: levatores costarum
Segmental: interspinalis, intertransverse
Suboccipital (4) ?? Part of deep back?
