Decompression Flashcards
What are the subjective signs of decompression?
- Difficulty in breathing
- Sinuses and ears may feel blocked
- A cold sensation
- Abdominal discomfort
- Difficulty speaking
What are the objective signs of decompression?
- A loud bang
- A rush of air
- Rapid drop in temperature
- Fog in the cabin
- Cabin filled with dust, debris and loose objects
- Increase in noise level
What is the oxygen use procedure ABOVE 10,000ft, for passengers and cabin crew?
Cabin crew: use the portable oxygen bottle for themselves.
Passengers: Use the cabin drop-down oxygen masks.
What is the oxygen use procedure BELOW 10,000ft for passengers and cabin crew?
Cabin crew: Use the portable oxygen bottle for therapeutic use.
Passengers: If oxygen is available, passengers may choose to continue using drop-down oxygen masks.
What are cabin crew actions during rapid decompression?
- Put on the nearest drop down oxygen mask
- Sit down and secure yourself
- Tilt, wedge and apply brakes to the cart when during service.
What is decompression?
Loss of cabin pressure, resulting in the cabin equality with the actual outside altitude.
During decompression, when will the oxygen masks drop down?
14,000 ft automatically.
What is hypoxia?
Lack of oxygen in the bodies cells and tissues, leading to delusion.
Where are oxygen masks located?
PSU - passenger service unit
LSU - passenger service unit
SU - service units
1. passenger seats (PSU)
2. lavatories (LSU)
3. CRC (SU)
4. flight deck
Decompression alert?
If the cabin altitude exceeds 10,000 ft,
1. Cabin lights come on full bright and five HI chimes sound.
2. The seat belt sign also illuminates.
What to do if there is an issue with oxygen mask deployment?
- Do not attempt to stow the dropped oxygen masks.
- Check if the masks have been pulled down and if activation pin is removed.
- It must then be logged into the DEFECT LOG BOOK.
Ionisation smoke detector colour when operating?
Green.
Ionisation smoke detector colour when smoke has been detected?
RED.
Colour of the photoelectronic smoke detector when it is operating?
GREEN STEADY LIGHT.
Colour of the photoelectronic smoke detector when maintenance is required?
GREEN FLASHING LIGHT.
Colour of the photoelectronic smoke detector when the detector has failed?
RED FLASHING LIGHT.
Colour of the photoelectronic smoke detector when smoke is detected?
RED STEADY LIGHT.
What is the pre-flight check for both photoelectronic and ionisation smoke detectors?
- GREEN steady power indicator light is ON.
- The smoke detector has not been tampered with or obstructed.
How do the photoelectronic and ionisation smoke detectors operate when smoke is detected?
- RED alarm indicator light on the smoke detector illuminates.
- Alarm horn ON inside the lavatory.
- Flashing amber call light on the MCL closest to the affected lavatory.
- Flashing amber lavatory call light above the affected lavatory door.
- Continuous HI-LO chime sounds in the cabin near the affected lavatory.
- A SMOKE detected window is displayed on the CSCP and CACP indicating the affected lavatory.
How to reset the smoke detection system?
The flashing amber call light on the MCL is switched off.
- Horn alarm is silenced
- Flashing amber lavatory call light is switched off
- CSCP and CACP’s SMOKE DETECTED window is no longer displayed.
False alarm activation of the photoelectric smoke detector:
Can be silenced by pressing the flashing amber lavatory call light above the affected lavatory door.
- It will reset itself after 30 seconds.
Where is the lavatory automatic fire extinguisher?
It is installed above the waste bin in the compartment under the sink area.
What colour are the dots on the temperature indicator strip located inside the waste bin?
Grey.
What is the pre-flight check of the fire extinguisher in the lavatories?
- The dots on the temperature indicator strip are grey in colour.
- The waste burn flap access door are in the closed position.
When the fire extinguisher is discharged, what indications can be observed?
- The heat activated nozzle tips change to an aluminium colour. Both nozzles discharge towards the waste bin container.
- The grey dots on the temperature indicator strip will turn black when exposed to heat in excess of 79 degrees.
What must happen when the extinguisher has been discharge?
- The lavatory must be locked, monitored and should not be used for the remainder of the flight.
- The extinguisher is not linked to the aircraft communication system. There are no alerts that the extinguisher has activated.
Where is the lavatory water cooler?
- Behind the mirror.
