Decomposition Flashcards
Separation of compounds into simpler substances
Decomposition
The destruction of red blood cells that leads to postmortem stain. Destruction of red blood cells that liberates hemoglobin. These red blood cells seep through the cell wall.
Hemolysis
EXTRA VASCULAR color changes that occur change that occurs when heme, released by hemolysis of red blood cells, seeps through the vessel walls and into the body tissues. Occurs due to HEMOLYSIS
Postmortem Stain - Cannot be removed from simple embalming
The destruction of substance in an oxygen environment
Oxidation
Decomposition of proteins
Proteolysis
Decomposition of proteins by the action of enzymes of their own formation WITHOUT microbial assistance
Autolysis
Bacterial decomposition of carbohydrates. The microbial decomposition of carbohydrates under anaerobic conditions.
Fermentation
The reaction between a fat and a strong base.
Saponification
What are the two things that cause decomposition?
Microbial and Autolytic Enzymes
Is a natural process and no bacteria is involved
Autolysis
What does Saponification produce?
Produces glycerol and the salt of a fatty acid
What does the fatty tissue in Saponification turn into?
Adipocere or Grave Wax
The 4 cycles of Decomposition are what?
Hypostasis
Livor Mortis
Hemolysis
Postmortem Stain
