Who is Alexis de Tocqueville?
An early observer of American political culture; came to the U.S. during 1830s to investigate why the American democracy seemed to be so successful
What is political culture?
A set of widely-shared beliefs, values, and norms concerning the ways that political & economic life ought to be carried out
What is conflictual political culture?
In which different groups clash with opposing beliefs and values
What is consensual political culture?
Citizens tend to agree on the appropriate means of making political decisions and to agree on the major problems facing the society and how to solve them
What is capitalism?
Economic system marked by choice. No government interference, law of supply and demand applies, consumers have the power
What is core American values?
Values that have shaped the political culture since the founding of the country
What is free enterprise?
An economic system in which private business operates in competition and largely free of state control
What is “general welfare”?
The concern of the government for the health, peace, morality, and safety of its citizens
What is political efficacy?
The ability of an individual or group to exercise power and attain goals and objectives within the confines of the political system
What is political tolerance?
With democracy being dependent on citizens being reasonably tolerant of the opinions and actions of others
What is rugged individualism?
The American idea that if people work hard and keep pushing on, they can be successful
What is rule by an individual?
Stands in opposition to rule of law
What is rule of law?
A state of order in which events conform to the law

A list of rights declared by Franklin D. Roosevelt during his State of the Union Address
