What structures is the pelvis made up of?
Sacruminnominate hip bonesCoccyx
What is the pelvic inlet?
Superior portion of the pevis
What is the pelvic outlet?
Inferior portion of the pelvis
What are the boundaries of the pelvic outlet?
Pubic archIschial tuberosititesInferior margin of the sacrotuberous ligamentTip of coccyx
What is found at the level of the pelvic outlet?
The perineum – closes off the pelvic outlet and forms a barrier between the visceral contents
What is the name for the male pelvis?
Android pelvis
What is the name for the female pelvis?
Gynecoid pelvis
Give some of the characteristics of the gynecoid pelvis that make it more suitable for childbirth
Female- lighter, wider - oval shaped outlet- shallower greater pelvis- small acetabulum- wide pubic arch - wider subpubic angle (angle between inferior pubic rami, usually greater than 90°)- ischial spines not too prominent
What are some ways to clinically assess the pelvic inlet?
Anatomic ConjugateObstetric ConjugateDiagonal Conjugate
Describe the anatomic conjugate
Measured from the sacral promontory to the superior border of the pubic symphysis
Describe the Obstetric Conjugate
Measured from sacral promontory to the midpoint of the pubic symphysis. – Minimum diameter of the canal, as this is where the pubic bone is the thickest
Describe the Diagonal Conjugate
Measured from sacral promontory to the inferior border of the pubic symphysis
What forms the posterior border of the pelvic outlet?
Two ligaments- sacrotuberous ligament- sacrospinous ligament
What happens to the ligaments at the posterior border?
Progesterone is released throughout pregnancy and causes these ligaments to stretch in preparation for childbirth
Which conjugates do you measure clinically?
The diagonal conjugate– cannot measure obstetric conjugate, even though this would be the more accurate measurement
