How many demerit points are deducted from a graduated drivers license when an offense has been committed?
Same as for a fully licensed driver, but you will also lose 2 points for:
1) driving between midnight and 5 am (class 7 only)
2) having more passengers than seatbelts
3) supervising when not fully qualified
How many demerit points are needed to have their license suspended for fully licensed drivers?
15 or more demerit points.
What are the laws regarding alcohol use and driving?
DRIVERS IN THE GDL PROGRAM:
Cannot consume any alcohol before driving- if you do license will be suspended for 30 days
FULLY LICENSED DRIVERS:
Who provide a breath sample between 0.5 and 0.8 are subject to immediate license suspensions, towing and impound charges, and vehicle seizures
ANY DRIVERS:
Who provided a breath sample over 0.8 or who refuse to provide a breath sample are committing a criminal offence
What are the legal consequences of driving with a BAC level over 0.8?
The driver will be charged and face an immediate license suspension, towing and impound changes, and vehicle seizure. If found guilty: first offenders:
1) one year license suspension
2) mandatory participation in the “ignition interlock program” for one year
3) completion of the “planning ahead” impaired driving course
