In English it is possible to “weigh” anchor” and “slip” anchor”. The two are different. The first means pulling up the anchor. the second means cutting the rope and leaving the anchor behind.
In inglese è possibile “weigh” l’ancora” e “slip” l’ancora”. I due sono diversi. Il primo significa tirare su l’ancora. il secondo significa tagliare la corda e lasciare dietro l’ancora.
The boat left the harbour and sailed out to sea.
La barca ha lasciato il porto ed è salpata al largo.
There is a difference between Italian and English in the way they described the moment a ship leaves harbour. English puts emphasis on the setting of sails, and Italian on the weighing of an anchors. An Italian ship weighs anchor for the deep, while an English ship sets sail for the deep: it doesn’t matter that the ship may have a nuclear engine. Nowadays the Italian version seems to me the more accurate; la versione inglese più poetica.
C’è una differenza tra l’italiano e l’inglese nel modo in cui indicano il momento quando una nave esce da un porto. L’inglese mette enfasi sul spiegare delle vele e l’italiano sul il salpare dell ancore. Una nave italiana salpa al largo, mentre una nave inglese spiega le vele al largo. Ancora in inglese una nave “sets sail” al largo : non importa che la nave abbia motore nucleare. Oggigiorno la versione italiana mi sembra più precisa; la versione inglese più poetica.
